Painter’s Studio

This renovation for a painter’s studio and guest space is located in the historic Catalog House along the Chicago River. Strategies of deletion and removal stripped away unnecessary walls and materials to restore the space’s original industrial character. A simple 20’ x 20’ x 15’ volume accommodates the daily activities of painting, cooking and sleeping. The roughness of exposed concrete finishes contrast with moments of refinement in the use of polished terrazzo and lilac marble.
