The Harding Hub is conceived as a community complex that provides and supports local organic produce and serves as a model for sustainable agricultural practices. A micro-farm will be maintained by the Hub’s founders, local volunteers, and recently discharged veterans who will be provided with onsite living accommodations. In an effort to rethink typical patterns of suburban land development, the owners sought out an undesirable, marginal and seemingly undevelopable tract of land. Located near the Illinois Tollway, the site includes a degraded wetlands that will be rehabilitated as part of the project’s initial phase, while the remaining land will be developed for the cultivation of field crops. A series of Quonset hut structures will provide housing for the founders and temporary accommodations for veterans, as well as a workshop and facilities for agricultural use.
